Sunderland Echo Portfolio Awards – Green Business Award

We are happy to announce that we are a finalist in the Sunderland Echo’s Portfolio Awards, in the green business category.

The judges including representatives from Sunderland Echo and Sunderland City Council will be visiting us on Tuesday 27th September 2011.

Award winners will be announced on 13th October 2011 at the Stadium of Light Awards Evening.

Waste (England & Wales) Regulations 2011

Please be aware that the new regulations regarding duty of care notes come into effect on 28th September 2011.

We have upgraded our systems in line with the regulations and they are now fully compliant.

The key changes are the addition of a declaration for the use of the waste hierarchy and the inclusion of SIC Code information on duty of care paperwork.

Fighting Fit 2011

Our director Stuart Smiles was proud to be a member of the panel for the Secrets of Success session chaired by Sara Coburn at the Fighting Fit 2011 conference.

The main aim of the conference was to provide an event tailored around Small – Medium Enterprises (SME’s), focusing on change with the current economic climate – addressing the challenges and opportunities that come with change, encompassing the digital movement that is prevalent today.

National Business Awards Finalists Announced 2011

Over 150 of Britain’s most innovative and sustainable public and private sector businesses have been announced today, Tuesday 2nd August, as finalists of the National Business Awards in partnership with Orange. Organisations shortlisted this year range from the well-known Debenhams, JD Wetherspoon, moneysupermarket.com, BSkyB, Majestic Wine and Supergroup – through to the rising stars of Ovo Energy, Door-Stop, ShortList Media and HeartSine Technologies.

The combined turnover of all finalists this year was £96bn, – if the National Business Awards finalist organisations were a country they would be a top 50 country in the world just behind Romania and ahead of New Zealand. Almost three times the size of Luxembourg.

Green Apple Environment Award

We have won a Green Apple Environment Award in the national campaign to find Britain’s greenest companies, councils and communities.

We competed against more than 500 other nominations and will be presented with a Green Apple Award at a glittering presentation ceremony in the House of Commons on November 14.

The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and have become established as the country’s major recognition for environmental endeavour among companies, councils, communities and countries.

The awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising and promoting environmental best practice.

Judges for the Green Apple Awards are drawn from the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management and other independent bodies.

Following the incident on 19 May 2011 the directors and staff of Alex Smiles Ltd would like to thank the emergency services for their prompt action and professionalism demonstrated throughout the night.

We would also like to thank members of the public for their vigilance the fire was extinguished at 9:45 and a cleanup operation was immediately implemented.

Deptford Terrace Transfer Station is now fully operational with the site open and available as per normal opening hours.

Latest Update

Deptford Terrace Transfer Station has a controlled fire on site, the material involved is processed non-hazardous timber.

There are no casualties involved and the fire is currently under control, with emergency services in attendance.

The Environment Agency and other relevant organisations have been informed.

Alex Smiles Ltd would like to thank members of the public for their vigilance.

Full business continuity has been implemented.
